In a combinatorial system comprising a substrate; at least one structure bound thereto, each said structure comprising a first portion bound to the substrate and a second portion detachably bound to said first portion by a chemical bond; the improvement wherein said chemical bond is between a benzyl group and an N, S or O atom of said second portion, and wherein said N, S or O is part of a heteroaromatic ring, or is directly attached to an aromatic or heteroaromatic ring.
