The present invention discloses hepatitis A virus biological clones adapted for growth in AGMK cells and the nucleic acid sequences which encode these hepatitis A viruses. The present invention further discloses the use of these viruses or the nucleic acid sequences encoding them as vaccines. The invention also discloses the use of these nucleic acid sequences to produce genomes encoding chimeric hepatitis A viruses.
