Novel DNA sequences isolated from pathogenic yeast provide a basis for discriminating between different genotypes. The invention provides probes and primers that are useful in differentiating among pathogenic yeast and assays for facilitating such differentiation. Methods of differentiating among such yeast are provided; the intergenic spacer nucleic acid sequences of 91 strains in electronic form are also provided.
