Systems and methods for order fulfillment using distributed workflow management architecture are disclosed. The system generally comprises a business objects module (138) defining business rules relating to the process, a business processes module (134) defining state models of the process, each state model defining states and state transitions, and a work item infrastructure module (136) containing work item business objects (156) and work item meta data (158). The business process module (134) is preferably configured to cause generation of work items in the work item infrastructure (136) on which work item actions can be performed and the performance of work items actions causes transitions within the state model in the business processes module (134) and causes updating of the business objects module (138).
