The invention relates to the conversion of an internal combustion engine to a piston compressor (1; 26) and to such a piston compressor (1; 26). The cylinder head (3; 30) of an internal combustion engine with at least one cylinder is removed and the inlet valve(s) (10) and the outlet valve(s) (11) are removed from said cylinder head. A nonreturn inlet valve (6; 27) is inserted in a fixed position where initially the inlet valve seat was located and is sealed so that the medium to be compressed can only be taken in via the sealed inlet channel of the mounted cylinder head (3; 30) and the nonreturn inlet valve (6; 27). A nonreturn outlet valve (8; 28) is inserted in a fixed position where initially the outlet valve seat was located and is sealed so that the compressed medium can only be pumped from the cylinder (21; 31, 32, 33) via the nonreturn outlet valve (8; 28) and via the sealed outlet channel of the mounted cylinder head (3; 30).
