Isolation and utilisation of pentosans from by-products of the starch industry

The present invention relates to the modification of pentosans from cereals. Specifically, the pentosans are heat- and alkali treated. Optionally, the pentosans are crosslinked using a cross-linking agent. After neutralisation the pentosan derivatives are, depending on the desired application, washed and dried. The pentosan derivatives show a high water binding capacity and are used for this capacity as component of super absorber in tissue paper, hygienic products, cat box filler and as binder in agricultural soil covers or in solid-state fermentation media.
