A method for applying ink to print rollers uses a relatively smooth inking roller (1) with a line of spray jets (2) to coat the roller with a controlled thickness of ink. Excess ink is removed by a scraper positioned downstream of the transfer point. The density of the ink can be varied across the length of the roller. The process can be equally applied for adhesive coating.
