The invention concerns a method for simplifying a mesh source M using a decimation step by edge fusion, and comprising a pseudo-optimisation step following said decimation step by ridge fusion, positioning the vertex resulting from said fusion so as to reduce the geometric deviation between said source mesh M and said simplified mesh M'. Advantageously, said step consists in counting the sharp edges around two vertices forming the edge to be merged, and in distinguishing between the two following situations: if the number of sharp edges are the same around two vertices, the vertex resulting from the fusion is set in the middle of the segment joining said vertices (42, 44); if the number of edges are different, the vertex resulting from the fusion is set on the vertex presenting the highest number of sharp edges (43, 45).
