PURPOSE: A method for manufacturing a nonasbestos friction material having high reliability and capable of exhibiting anti-shudder performances and excellent high speed and energy durability by providing a fibrous base material comprising a porous primary layer and a secondary layer. CONSTITUTION: The friction material comprises a fibrous base material impregnated with at least one curable resin and the base material has a porous primary and a secondary layer. The primary layer contains (A) less fibrillated aramid fibers in 10-50% weight ratio, (B) carbon particles in 5-20% weight ratio, (C) a carbon filler in 5-25% weight ratio, (D) cotton fibers in 0-10% weight ratio and (E) phenolic novoloid fibers in 0.5-5% weight ratio. The porous primary layer has 2.0-15 micrometer of average pore diameter and the secondary layer contains the carbon particles on at least one surface of the primary layer. The carbon particles are present in 0.2-20% weight ratio based on the weight of the fibrous base material and the carbon particles cover 3-90% of the surface area of the primary layer.
