PURPOSE: A microorganism, Citrobacter sp. Y19(KFCC-11087) and a method for producing hydrogen by using the same are provided. Thereby, carbon monoxide can be converted into hydrogen, then the hydrogen is used as a source of energy, so that the environmental pollution can be inhibited. CONSTITUTION: A microorganism, Citrobacter sp. Y19(KFCC-11087) is capable to rapidly convert carbon monoxide into hydrogen and its growth rate is fast. The microorganism, Citrobacter sp. Y19(KFCC-11087) is isolated from the sludge in an anaerobic fire extinguishing vessel by incubating and screening procedures and is identified by 16S rDNA analysis. The hydrogen is produced by incubating the microorganism, Citrobacter sp. Y19(KFCC-11087) in an appropriate medium in the presence of oxygen, then providing carbon monoxide in the absence of oxygen.
