PURPOSE: A gene controlling the life span of plant leaf isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana and a mutant gene thereof are provided for identifying the signal transfer pathway affecting the rate of aging and improving the productivity of plant. CONSTITUTION: The gene, ORE9 gene, controlling the life span of plant leaf isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana, encodes ORE9 protein which consists of 693 amino acids, contains F-box motif and leucine-rich repeats, and extends the life span of the plants by affecting the interaction of proteins relating the aging initiation via F-box motif. The life span of the plants is extended by substituting T for C at the position of 979th base thereof and consequently terminating translation earlier.
