PURPOSE: A WAN access system capable of line switching and packet switching is provided to perform data processing by changing only software without changing of hardware form even though a data switching method, a WAN protocol used in an upper data hierarchy, is changed in case that an access rate of a physical hierarchy is a T1/E1 grade. CONSTITUTION: A user access processing module(40) includes an analog/digital connecting unit(41) which performs an analog connecting process with respect to a telephone set and a facsimile machine and a digital connection process with respect to a digital private switching system, a serial connecting unit(42) which performs a V.35 or an RS-449 interface, and a LAN connecting unit(43) which handles a LAN connection. A central processing module(50) includes a TDM switching unit(51) which switches between each TDM bus to enable line switching and packet switching. A voice processor(52) which compresses and restore a voice data transmitted to or received from the analog/digital connecting unit(41), a processor module(52) supports a part of an ATM hierarchy, controls partial processing unit of each module processor, and processes an AAL5 SAR and a signaling AAL, and an AAL1 processing/UTOPIA multiplexer(54) which processes an AAL1 SAR and UTOPIA bus multiplexing. A WAM connection processing module(60) includes a physical medium connecting unit(61) which handles a physical medium connection, a frame converting processor(62) which converts a frame commonly used in the physical hierarchy to an electric signal or converts an electric signal received through the physical medium connecting unit(61) to a frame data, a TDM selector(63) which selects and processes a TDM bus under the control of the processor module(53), and a PLCP processor(64) changes a data received through a TUOPIA bus in a frame form in use for the physical hierarchy to transmit it to the frame converter(62) through the TDM selector(63) or extracts a data to be transmitted to the AAL1 processing/UTOPIA multiplexer(54) of the central control processing module(50) through the UTOPIA bus, from the frame form of the physical hierarchy received through the frame converter(62).
