Selected kinds of complexes of chiral ligands having molybdenum, tungsten or chromium, preferably molybdenum, are effective as catalysts for the high enantioselective and stereoselective alkylation of allyl substrates. Such compositions provide a variety of low cost choices for existing catalysts. A chiral ligand is a chiral component having a first and a second chiral center substituted with an X group selected from (i) -O- or -NR-, wherein R is hydrogen or a lower alkyl group, respectively, and (ii) a ring nitrogen atom And each heterocyclic group optionally consisting of a heterocyclic group optionally substituted with one or more groups selected from alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, acyl, acyloxy, amide, tertiary amine, nitro, or halogen.
