Novel use of angelan from Angelica gigas for treating diabetes mellitus

PURPOSE: A composition for the prevention and treatment of diabetes containing acidic polysaccharide extracted from Angelica gigas as an effective component is provided which has an excellent effect on preventing and treating diabetes and shows no side effects in animals. CONSTITUTION: Angelan as an extract of Angelica gigas has the following physicochemical characteristic of a saccharide content of 85 to 90%(w/w), a uronic acid content of 15.5 to 68%, a large amount of galacturonic acid, galactose and arabinose, a small amount of mannose, rhamnose and xylose and a molecular weight of about 10,000 dalton.
