PURPOSE: A method for tracing a welding line of an automatic welding machine is provided to obtain the exact coordinates of a welding point by performing a first processing in which an approximate position of the welding point is found after securing the surface image of a material to be welded and performing a second processing for a certain area centering on the found welding point. CONSTITUTION: The method for tracing a welding line of an automatic welding machine comprises the steps of obtaining the surface images of a material to be welded from an image obtaining means according to control signals of a welding control means(S1,S2); analyzing information necessary for image processing included in the control signals from the image processing means after obtaining images(S3); measuring an approximate position of a welding point by performing first processing according to results of signal analysis and the control signals in the image processing means(S4); finding the position of an exact welding point with the second processing by reexamining the adjacent area centering on the approximate position of the welding point in the image processing means(S5); and transferring coordinates of the welding point which is found through the first and second processing to the welding control means(S6).
