The head mounted display device 10 provides a low weight, a low center of gravity, and a low moment of inertia about the azimuth and elevation axes of the head movement. The display device 10 uses a beam splitter mirror 16 disposed obliquely between the eye 20 of the user 22 and the combiner inner surface 18a of the visor 28. The projector 36 is mounted on the side of the user so as to have a low center of gravity at a position close to the horizontal axis of the vertical movement of the head. The projector 36 is a small, low weight image source 12 with a projection folding mirror 30 disposed on the side of the beam splitter mirror 16 at eye level to project the image light towards the beam splitter mirror 16.
