The present invention relates to a novel dipeptidylaminopeptidase isolated from the cellular slime mold, Dictyostelium discoideum. The new DAP enzyme, ie dDAP, exhibits slightly similar activity to both DAP-I and DAP-III but is very different from these enzymes in physical and other enzymatic properties. The invention also relates to a method for removing a dipeptide from the N-terminus of a recombinantly produced precursor protein or peptide using a dDAP enzyme. In addition, the present invention is directed to D. a. A method for isolating and purifying dDAP enzyme from a culture of discidium.
