PURPOSE: An apparatus for quickly inputting a digit or a character in a small device or a desktop telephone is provided to quickly input the digit or the character by installing at least one or more character designation switches at left and right sides or left and right edges, driving the character designation switches by one hand, and operating a numerical key button by the other hand. CONSTITUTION: A numerical key signal generating unit(20) generates a numerical key signal for informing an inputted numerical key button on the basis of the operation of numerical key buttons. L1 and L2 designation signal generating units(12,16) and R1 and R2 designation signal generating units(14,18) generate designation signals for designating key codes to characters indicated on the numerical key buttons on the basis of at least one or more character designation switches. A key code generating unit(10) generates key codes to characters designated in the numerical key codes or the numerical key buttons on the basis of the numerical key signal generated in the numerical key signal generating unit(20) or the combination of the designation signals and the numerical key signals. A display unit displays a character or a digit corresponding to the key code on the basis of the key code generated in the key code generating unit(10), or displays the designation of the L1 and L2 designation signal generating units(12,16) and R1 and R2 designation signal generating units(14,18). The character designation switches are installed at left and right sides or left and right edges of a small device.
