The steam cooking device has a boiler (2), a cooking space (3), supplied with steam from the boiler and an electric heating device (19), used for pre-heating the cooking space. A control (4) allows the electric heating device to be used during a pre-heating phase before steam is supplied, until the cooking space reaches a pre-heating temperature which is less than the boiling point of water.
