The optimisation system allows the control and/or setting parameters, e.g. the setting angles of the entry and exit flow controls (VLA, NLA) and/or the drive revs. to be adjusted in dependence on stored multi-dimensional efficiency optimisation combined characteristic fields, obtained by previous measurements. Alternatively the efficiency optimisation regulation of the compressor is effected by sampling operating points corresponding to a characteristic field, with a sequence of operating points (Vist, Yist) converging on the required operating point (Vsoll, Ysoll) obtained.
