A trough is formed between two retaining plates to receive paste for application to lengths of wallpaper by means of a coating roller, against which the wallpaper is pressed by a pressure roller (7). A cutting device (9) is provided for cutting the wallpaper in a transverse direction. Preferably the cutting device is positioned on or in front of the trough cover, the cutting device forming the edge of the cover. The cutting device is integrated into the cover or is fastened to it and has a guide rail for a blade (13) which can be moved transverse to the wallpaper.
