The drain insertion device uses an endoscope which has a guide catheter (4) over which the drain (21) is fitted at the distal end and a relatively sliding displacement catheter (3), received within the working channel of the endoscope. An endless cord loop (45) has sections (46,47) passed around the guide catheter and the displacement catheter, coupled together by passing the cord loop through respective openings (42,44) in the drain and the displacement catheter, to provide a mechanical coupling between the drain and the displacement catheter.
