The device has a permanent magnet (4) cooperating with a sensor (3), coupled to an electronic control/evaluation circuit (6). The sensor and circuit are contained within a cavity provided by the piston rod (1'), and sealed within a housing (9), via a hermetic seal between the piston rod cavity and the cover (1''). The cable (5) for the sensor is passed through this, to a remote controller.
