The fuel injection system (1) has a high pressure pump for feeding the fuel to a high pressure reservoir (2) which is coupled to at least one fuel injector (4), provided with a magnetically-operated injection valve (7) and an independent magnetic valve (33) for controlling a pressure control valve (17), for opening and closing a flow connection between the high pressure reservoir and the fuel injector and a return flow connection between the injector and the low pressure side of the fuel injection system.
