An optically transparent layer system comprises a thin metal or metal compound modification layer (3) between two base layer system layers (2, 4) with similar optical parameters. An optically transparent layer system consists of a 5-20 nm thick silver-containing functional layer (5) between a dielectric top layer (6) and a base layer system comprising a first metal oxide or silicon compound layer (2) with a refractive index of 1.8-2.6 at 380-780 nm wavelength, a 0.5-2 nm thick modification layer (3) of metal or metal compound and a third metal oxide layer (4) having the same optical parameter range as the first layer. An Independent claim is also included for production of the above optically transparent layer system by sputtering.
