Prior to placing the reinforcing fabric in a mold and injecting polymer material, the fabric (12) is preformed in a tool (6) while held in a tensioning frame (20). Several layers (12a,b,c) of fabric with different fiber directions can be joined with a thermoplastic binder. The tool (6) consists of a negative form (8) and a positive die (10) with a spring-loaded tensioning frame (20) to hold the fabric (12) in position while the tool closes.
