The brush has at least one toothed rod (6) set in the brush head (2) and engaging through gearing (13) with the individual bristle tufts (4). When cleaning teeth the brush head is able to execute a guided sliding longitudinal movement in both directions to trigger rotation of the bristle tufts. All plastics components which take up the forces are preferably made from duroplastics of suitable shape and dimensions. The bearing components can be made from stainless steel.
