Microfiltration membranes (MFM) based on cellulose acetate (CA), in which up to 5 wt% hydrophilic synthetic silica (H-SIL) is incorporated in the matrix of the finished, dried membrane in such a way that it cannot be leached out. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of MFM by dissolving CA in a mixture of methyl formate and methyl acetate ((10-90):(90-10) by weight), mixing the solution with up to 5 wt% H-SIL and reprecipitating the CA with non-solvents by conventional methods to form a membrane
