The protective cap (4) for a pressurized gas bottle, with a bottle neck (2) and a valve (3) at the free neck end, has a protective wall section (5) which shrouds the valve (3) when it is in position at the gas bottle (1). The cap (4) is held in place by a locking unit (6) to hold the protective wall (5) at the bottle neck (2) in a release mounting. The locking unit (6) is a split ring with an outer groove (7) to be engaged by the wall (5) of the cap (4) when in position.
