The drive system has a drive shaft (14) and an electric machine (34) for turning the shaft and/or for deriving electrical energy when the shaft is turning. The electric machine has a stator arrangement (36) and a permanent magnetic rotor arrangement (38) that rotates with the shaft. The rotor arrangement can be brought to a desired working temperature and/or held close to the working temperature by a heat transfer arrangement (42), preferably using a heat transfer fluid. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating a drive system.
