Device operates in the following manner: the probe is moved manually or using a motorized mechanism into a position in which it is protected against external shocks but can not be used for taking measurements, then using the same manual or motorized mechanism the probe is moved into an operating position in which position measurements can be undertaken. An Independent claim is made for a position measurement device especially for cylindrical objects and relates particularly to optical gyroscopes. The gyroscope is moved slowly from a protected position to a position where it is precisely positioned on the surface of the object for which the position is to be measured.
