The protective mantle (4) is assembled from a number of mantle sections (4a,4c) with a central bore for threading onto the cable (1a,1b) and at least one base component (7) fitted between adjacent mantle sections. The base component is split into 2 longitudinal halves, allowing its removal for facilitating displacement of the mantle sections along the cable, to allow removal of the plug connector from the cable end.
