The chain wheel has an elastically deformable damping ring (6) positioned adjacent the peripheral cogs (4) of the chain wheel on at least one side, for over-lapping contact with the links (14,15) of the chain (9). The damping ring has a sinusoidal waveform around its inner periphery, with the wave peaks (18) acting as support regions and the wave troughs (19) acting as spring regions for the damping ring. An Independent claim for a damping ring for a chain wheel is also included.
