The shock absorber for a car comprises a cylinder (3) which is divided by a separating piston (8) into an oil chamber (7) and a gas chamber (9). The oil chamber is subdivided into a first (6) and second (7) chamber by a second piston (5) which has a through bore (13) allowing oil to pass between the two chambers. The novel feature is that the gas chamber contains a regulating piston (10) which allows its volume to be varied.
