To service the workstation of a textile machine, and particularly during bobbin doffing at bobbin winders, on a bobbin change the yarn is caught and cut. The yarn cutter is given a cleaning action at set time intervals and/or according to fixed working phases. The yarn cutter is cleaned before or after the transfer of yarn to the bobbin winder and/or before or after a yarn splicing action. The cleaning action on the yarn cutter is in the opposite direction to the yarn feed line, and is intermittent. While the yarn cutter is cleaned, other components of the bobbin winder are cleaned at the same time and they are give a positive working action during cleaning. The cutter is also sharpened while it is being cleaned. An Independent claim is included for a bobbin winder service appts. with a cleaning unit (4) at the yarn cutter (15). Preferred Features: The cleaning unit (4) is moved into the working position in a relative movement between it and the yarn cutter (15). The cleaner (4) is at a positioning unit, especially at a mobile service unit which travels along the line of winding stations at the bobbin winding machine, to move the cleaning unit (4) from its rest position into the working position to clean a cutter, and back after the cleaning cycle. The positioning unit carries a drive roller to rotate an empty sleeve or full bobbin in place at the bobbin winder (1). The cleaner (4) is connected to a control (5) to be activated outside the times when the yarn (F) is laid at the yarn catch or when a yarn is being spliced. The cleaner (4) is mounted and aligned so that its working direction (f2) is against the yarn feed direction (f1) to the cutter (15). The cleaner (4) has a pneumatic action, especially as a compressed air jet (40), and the delivered cleaning medium is used to sharpen the cutter (15). The cleaner can also have a suction jet. The cleaner (4) has an elastic guide or a guide on an elastic mounting at the bobbin winder (1). A catch unit traps dirt and debris detached by the cleaner (4). The cleaner (4) can be positioned at additional components of the bobbin winder (1), in addition to the yarn cutter (15), and especially the yarn catch, which are operated during cleaning.
