The brightness signal detection method uses amplification of the brightness signals provided by the sensor elements (P1,..Px, ...Pn) before digitizing via an A/D converter (3), with stepped adjustment of the amplification for a selected sensor element (P1), from a maximum amplification factor (Vmax), until the amplified brightness signal lies within the working range of the A/D converter. The obtained communications factor is used as the maximum amplification factor for the signal from the next sensor element and the adjustment process is repeated. An Independent claim for application of a brightness signal detection method for detecting a brightness maximum is also included.
