A sintered body is made of a sintered material with a longitudinally extended grains. The longitudinal direction of the grains in the body has a preferred direction. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a fuel element for a water-cooled nuclear reactor comprising fuel rods with a sleeve tube in which the sintered body is enclosed; and (2) the production of the sintered body comprising pressing a powder mixture containing freshly prepared UO2 and grain-growing active U3O8 to a green body, sintering at 1000-1400 deg C, and reducing at 1100-1800 deg C.
