The method involves continuously controlling the stroke vol. of a variable displacement pump (2) so that the product of the stroke vol. and the pressure of hydraulic fluid in the line leading to the pump is approximately constant in engine braking mode, in which the hydraulic motor (10) acts as a pump. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for controlling a hydraulic vehicle drive.
