Poly-(arylene vinylene) with two optionally substituted aryl or heteroaryl substituents on the vinylene double bond is used as fluorescent material for high-intensity lighting devices with high current density. Fluorescent material for high-intensity lighting devices with high current density comprises poly-(arylene vinylene) with two aryl substituents on the vinylene double bond, made up of repeating units of formula (I): m, n = 1-5; Ar, Ar', Ar'' = 4-14C aromatic or heteroaromatic groups which may be bridged and/or condensed by means of one or more linkages, and Ar consists of one or more 1,2-, 1,3- and/or 1,4-arylene groups; R', R'' = H, 1-20C linear, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkoxy (optionally with one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups replaced by -O-, -S-, -CO-, -COO-, -OCO-, -NR1-, -(NR2R3)+- A- or -CONR4-), CN, F, Cl, aryloxy, arylthio, -N(aryl)2, -P(aryl)2, -Si(aryl)3 or a single 1-14C aryl group, which may be replaced by one or more non-aromatic radicals; A = a single-charged anion or one equivalent thereof; R1-R4 = H or 1-20C aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbyl; .Independent claims are also included for lighting devices as above with a primary radiation source and a fluorescent material (I) for at least partial conversion of the primary radiation, and for high-intensity lighting devices containing (I).
