Rebuilding an open-end rotor spinning machine with a number of spinning stations (5), and modernizing it at the same time, includes replacing the bobbin doffing and yarn splicing systems by a new mobile maintenance unit (53,55). The unit exchanges a full bobbin with a new empty bobbin sleeve without splicing a sleeve yarn to the newly-spun yarn. To rebuild an open-end rotor spinning machine with a number of spinning stations (5), and modernize it at the same time, the bobbin doffing and yarn splicing systems are replaced by at least one new mobile maintenance unit (53,55) to travel along the spinning stations. The unit will exchange a full bobbin with a new bobbin sleeve which is empty and without a starter yarn and without splicing a sleeve yarn to the newly-spun yarn, so that the spun yarn is spliced to a separate yarn to be bonded to the empty sleeve. The sleeve loading unit is replaced by a feed (57) of empty sleeves at the maintenance unit.
