The method involves determination of the temperature distribution in a machine part after cooling using a temperature measurement paint (15) that has an irreversible color change on a visible machine part. An alarm is triggered by an oil mist when excessive temperature occurs, then the temperature measurement paint is observed after the cooling period and a color change used to detect part damage. Independent claims are also included for the following: a machine with at least one part that heats up when damaged.
