Determination of isocyanates comprises contacting a sample with a reagent and optionally a buffer and evaluating the reaction by an ultraviolet/visible, fluorescence or mass spectrometric or electrochemical method. The reagent is a 4-nitro-, 4-sulfamoyl, 4-(N,N-dimethylsulfamoyl) or 4-sulfo-7-piperazino-2,1,3-benzooxadiazole (I). Determination of isocyanates comprises contacting a sample with a reagent and optionally a buffer and evaluating the reaction by an ultraviolet/visible, fluorescence or mass spectrometric or electrochemical method. The reagent is a 4-nitro-, 4-sulfamoyl, 4-(N,N-dimethylsulfamoyl) or 4-sulfo-7-piperazino-2,1,3-benzooxadiazole of formula (I); R = nitro (-NO2), sulfamoyl (-SO2NH2), N,N-dimethylsulfamoyl (-SO2N(CH3)2) or sulfo (-SO3H).
