To smooth-out treatment plant loading over the course of the day, the flow direction of effluent air through a pre-adsorption-, smoothing- or equalization filter is periodically reversed. An Independent claim is included for corresponding plant to separate the organic content, i.e. the VOCs, of effluent air. Effluent air purification plant is preceded by a smoothing filter used as described. Preferred Features: Each reversal of air flow direction through the filter, occurs during daily interval(s) of production shutdown, when there are no emissions. Flowrate is adjusted during these intervals, such that the total of material desorbed, equals that adsorbed during the previous production interval. To increase desorption rate, the desorption air is heated. To further balance concentration and/or pollutant quantities during production time, the filter is bypassed and the effluent air is fed directly to the purification plant.
