The atomizer has a rotating atomizer bell (14) with ejection edge (18) for the coating material. A second fluid, esp. air, is directed against the material at the edge, so that the material is further atomized in the vicinity of the edge. The air is sprayed with a twist component in or against the direction of rotation of the ejection edge. The air is guided through an inner chamber (24) of the rotating bell. The air volume is regulated by a closed regulator circuit.
