Silicon- or germanium-containing 'traceless' linkers (I), which are bonded to a solid phase for solid phase synthesis of a target molecule (A) and can be cleaved from (A) under mild conditions to form a zwitterion, are new. Independent claims are included for: (i) the preparation of certain preferred (I); (ii) new zwitterions of formula (VIII); and (iii) the preparation of (VIII). P' = solid phase without terminal functional groups; S'' = -N+HY-, -NH-(CH2)x-N+- or a 5-8 membered saturated heterocycle with a tetracoordinated (ammonium) N atom and optionally a second N atom (P' being bonded to C or N and (CH2)x being bonded to the ammonium N); Y = H or A; A = 1-6C alkyl; X = Si or Ge; x = 1-5; Q1 + Q2 = di-deprotonated residue of a diol, 2-hydroxycarboxylic acid, salicylic acid, cis-ethene-1,2-diol (corresponding to the tautomer of the corresponding 2-hydroxyketone) or hydroximic acid (corresponding to the tautomer of the corresponding hydroxamic acid).
