The shift device has connecting elements for fixing a selected idle wheel relative to the idle wheel shaft and operated by shift forks each having a slide block directed towards the shift roller. The slide blocks project into control grooves (3) on the circumference of the shift roller which are closed per se and are stepped radially over the entire axial extension of their contour which has a centring area tapering from the largest width to the axial centre to move block from centre position into two axially opposite end positions. The shift roller is drivable for turning in one direction and is associated with a rotary angle measuring device. A control unit is provided connected to this measuring device and to the gear stage detector unit as well as to the actuators of the slide blocks of the individual shift forks (2).
