The light conductor has a light conductor bundle (1) with one or more optical fibre strands (2,3), which are packed tightly together in a matrix array at either end, to provide a linear light input coupling surface (5) and a linear light exit coupling surface (6), the latter matched to the shape of the welding line, e.g. using a shaped outer frame (7).
