Production of a chemical substance library (CSL) by reacting compounds (A), which contain the same types of functional groups, with a substoichiometric amount of a chemical reagent (B). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) detecting protein-ligand complexes in CSL, produced by the new way or derived from natural sources, by mass spectrometric methods; and (2) use of chitin oligomers (I) as new lead structures for developing chitinase inhibitors, with (I) containing one or two GlcN (2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose) and four or five GlcNAc (2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose) monosaccharide units.
