The invention relates to an ore mill which is driven by means of a ring motor (1) with a rotor (7) and a stator (3), and to a method for operating said ore mill. Said ring motor has a radiator (10) for electromagnetically irradiating the rotor or a part that rotates with the rotor; a sensor for receiving the electromagnetic radiation reflected by the rotor or the part that rotates with the rotor, and evaluating means for determining the angle of rotation and/or speed of rotation of the ore based on the electromagnetic radiation received by the sensor.
