Cutting gas consists of a gas mixture containing helium. An Independent claim is also included for a process for laser beam welding of highly reflective materials comprising guiding a focussed laser beam onto the workpiece surface and feeding the cutting gas mixture from a nozzle onto the surface. Preferred Features: The gas mixture contains (in volume %) 1-75, preferably 10-70, especially 30-65 helium, and at least 25, preferably 25-90, especially 40-75 nitrogen.
